So, we all know that FIRST IMPRESSIONS are everything. First impressions can make or break an interview or determine your outlook on someone indefinitely.

But did you know that first impressions also apply to your house?

 

You only have a 7-second window for your home to shine above all others on the market or in your neighborhood. It’s time to make the best of that small window and start making changes that will WOW your house guests.

 

People remember stuff.

 

A reno or small fix-me ups don’t have to be intimidating, expensive, or out of reach. This blog has some little things that you can do on a weekend to add to your home’s interior and exterior appeal.  The bonus is that they are small and won’t take much time at all!

Now let’s make your house “The One” people remember:

 

1.     CLEAN AND DECLUTTER

You’ve heard it before…DECLUTTER, DECLUTTER, DECLUTTER!  This cannot be said enough because it is super important!  People cannot see themselves in a home if they cannot “SEE” the house.  Here are a few ideas to get you started:

·      Eliminate Clutter

I have a rule in my home-- if I haven’t used it in over a year, I probably won’t in the next year.  So, purge your home of unwanted and unnecessary items.  Consider donating them to local charities or have a garage sale.

·      Clean your House

Not going to lie, this will take the most time commitment!  Do a bumped-up Spring Cleaning.  Steam clean your carpets, scrub your grout, get into the nooks and crannies, wash your windows (inside and out).  The improvement will amaze you, and potential buyers!

·      Organize Closets, Cabinets and Drawers

We are all guilty of putting that into a closet, so it’s out of sight.  Closets, cabinets and drawers are very often opened during open houses.  The more space the area appears to have will entice buyers looking for storage space in a home.  This also shows that you care for your home…a big bonus with a potential buyer!

 

 

2.     MAKE SMALL REPAIRS

Ask yourself this, would you buy a home needing repair?  Probably not, so best get these items looked after before your show your home for the first time.

·      Fix leaking faucets and toilets

·      Replace caulking around tubs, showers and sinks

·      Clean or repair and grout issues around your tile

·      Repaint your home in neutral colours and make drywall repairs

·      Replace or repair damaged window screens

·      Replace burnt out lightbulbs

 

3.     GET CURB APPEAL

The outside of your home is what will draw people inside.  Don’t underestimate the value of curb appeal!  If you don’t have a green thumb, then use patio pots to add that visual appeal.  Many garden centers will plant them for you or have them pre-done for those that don’t wish to spend much time selecting plants.

·      Trim bushes, shrubs and trees

        o   Make sure nothing is creeping onto your roof or siding

·      Repair gutters and downspouts

·      Freshen up your gardens with mulch or rock

       o   This one item will provide immediate appeal to a passerby

·      Clean your walkways and driveways of oil or grease stains, and any weeds peeking through cracks

         o For the environmentally conscious, pour boiling salted water onto the weeds in those cracks, the results will amaze you

·      If you can, put out planter pots of annuals for colour

·      Consider placing a new WELCOME mat on your front porch

·      Make sure your house number is easy to see

 

With a small amount of effort, your house will be welcoming from the outside in!
